Community Shared Food Distribution (No longer receiving.)
Hosted by: Horton Public Library
Provided by: LibertyFruitCo. through the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program.
Was Thursdays 11:30am from July 2nd- Dec 17th 2020. We did not receive the 5th phase.
Locations: Horton Civic Center & the Blue Building.
The Horton Public Library was honored to host the Community Food Distribution program. This was a weekly event, where we received boxes of fresh produce, meat & dairy for people within our surrounding communities during our Nation’s time of hardship. There were no participatory guidelines or forms required. We were here to provide a helping hand. Boxed Food Delivery was staged as a touch-less system; vehicles lined up to drive through in a snaking manner wit self service available but aid was available to seniors or the disabled. This project was not limited to Horton or Brown County residents. We encouraged the citizens of all our local rural towns (Everest, Muscotah, Whiting, Netawaka, Mercier, Powhatten, Willis, Hiawatha…) to come & receive the assistance. We had people stop in for the distribution who were from Missouri, Nebraska, Illinois, Alabama, & even Florida. We had volunteers each week to unwrap the pallets once offloaded from the shipment truck & help distribute the boxes to recipients who were unable to collect them on their own. We provided over 15K boxes of food worth over $600K!
